About Charles Vess
Charles Vess began his career as a freelance illustrator, producing art for such publications as Heavy Metal and National Lampoon. He gained notoriety in the late ’80s and early ’90s as an artist for comic books, chiefly through his celebrated collaborations with Neil Gaiman. “Sandman” and “The Books of Magic” (DC Comics) are among their most beloved works. Issue number 19 of “Sandman,” titled “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” won the 1991 World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story, and is the only single issue of a comic book ever to win this prestigious prize. Vess and Gaiman have continued to collaborate on projects such as the bestselling novel “Stardust,” which was also made into a popular movie starring Robert De Niro, Claire Danes and Michelle Pfeiffer. Recently, Vess has focused on book illustrations and has collaborated with writer Charles De Lint on several highly successful novels and collections of stories, including “A Circle of Cats” (Viking, 2003), “Moonheart” (Subterranean Press, 2004) and “The Green Man: Tales from the Mythic Forest” (Viking, 2001). “The Cats of Tanglewood Forest” (Little Brown, 2013) is their latest work and was the winner of a Gold AADY Award and the Best in Show title at the 2015 Southwest Virginia American Advertising Awards. A retrospective of Vess’s art is featured in the book “Drawing Down the Moon: The Art of Charles Vess” (Dark Horse Press, 2011). His studio, Green Man Press, is located in Abingdon, VA.
